Organisational Change in Barnardos - Developing relevant capacity

The Atlantic Philanthropies has commissioned the authors of this case study to undertake a review of capacity building strategies, to document and learn about the implementation and impact of capacity building strategies in a sample of Atlantic grantees.

Barnardos moved from delivering a wide range of services to a smaller, needs-led, outcome focused service in a relatively short time. This has required the organisation to change: to think differently and to do things differently. This case study focuses on the learning about the process of change, captures key elements of the supports for and barriers to change and identifies the correspondence between the literature on capacity development and the experience of Barnardos in undertaking such development.
